Steinspark is a beer garden, not a restaurant!
A beer garden (German: Biergarten) is an outdoor area in which beer and food are served, typically at shared tables shaded by trees.
This is the first time we have attempted a pre-event gathering. We don't have a plan B for inclement weather, however.
It seems like a great place to gather. We hope this is a good opportunity for you to meet fellow teams and reunite with past participants. This is not mandatory but we encourage you to show up for awhile. Might be fun.
We aren't going to check up on you for these things. It's up to you to make sure you have what you need.
For those of you who want to compete for meaningless prizes-
1.You need an Instagram account. Personal or team account is fine. Use one account per car.
2.Cassette player. Make sure it can be heard while driving.
3.Correctly inflated spare tire/ jack. Make sure the jack you are bringing can be operated safely on dirt surfaces.
RECOMMENDED ITEMS:
In order to provide as many options for the experience you want to have, these navigational aids are recommended:
-Google maps or similar with downloaded maps for Michigan, Ohio and Indiana loaded on your phone or tablet. There will be areas where cellular signal is nonexistent.
-GPX reader of your choice that you know how to use.
A Gazetteer could also be helpful.
-Tow Strap. (Don't get your shorts in a knot, we aren't sending you into an off-road hellscape, its just a good idea in general. Remember, the entire route was successfully navigated in a Acura station wagon a few weeks ago. No damage was incurred.)
-Spare gasoline. For those of you who have a vehicle with insatiable appetite for fuel and/or a tiny fuel tank. There are areas where gas stations are scarce.
Additional Thoughts:
This year, those who are really committed to the points competition will be challenged like never before. With that being said, the roads we have selected will not include some of the sketchy options offered in past events. To get the maximum amount of points, you will need to follow the route in it's entirety. You will also have to rely solely on our horrible primary navigational guide. You will likely be frustrated and at times, filled with rage and or sorrow.
For the rest of you- you will be provided a few options that can make the trip a bit easier. It's going to be a long day, regardless.
We strongly recommend having at least one other team with you at all times in case of an emergency or break down. This is an unsupported event. We can almost guarantee if anyone has a problem on course, someone will make an effort to help. But ultimately, it is up to you to have a contingency plan. There are a lot of remote sections you will be traveling in. Keep in mind that in many rural areas the locals enjoy blasting around in Side By Side ATV's and may not be paying as close attention to things as they need to be.
You are going to see a lot of beautiful things along the way, too. If fact, we tried to make sure as much of the trip as possible would be memorable. Take your time. Take photos. Enjoy the sights. Its not a race. We hope you have a great time. It just might a a few days later when you realize it was.
You should arrive at your endpoint Saturday night by 8 pm or so. A long day, but not too long.
Bring snacks.
